This song, like many of the songs from Middle Aegis, took a long time to gestate. It started sometime in 2005 or 2006. I was trying to channel a little of that Smashing Pumpkins vibe from the mid-90s. "Side streets in the alley bosom" just sounds very Billy Corgan to me. I had the first verse for a few years before I ever really sat down to put together the second one. I think part of why I hadn't is because I liked the first verse so much I was a bit intimidated to try and write a second one. I think, in the end, it worked.
The above-referenced album - and in particular the collection of songs from this EP - were really about a dark time in my life creatively where I was trying to do all the soul searching I could... a bit of a melancholy trip through things I'd lost and things I was hoping to gain that weren't quite coming around like I would have liked.

You never feared the night
You never fell in shame
Never put things right
Again
Never took the blame
Fully
Sidestreets in the alley bosom
You can't miss the cold
There's no telephone
No one would pick you up at home
To hear you breathe
No one knows what you see
If you don't speak
But you don't have to tell me
That you believe
You never asked for time
Never cast a shadow
Never walked the blind
Back home
Never watched the sad go
Hungry
Everyone seeks
Everyone finds
That old miracle
Don't come around no more
Your friends have pitchforks at your door
And they won't leave
No one knows what you dream
If you don't speak
But you don't have to tell me
That you believe
Mister, you have crawled
Over every wall
Mister, you have tried
You won't be denied
Everyone seeks
Everyone finds
That old miracle
Don't come around no more
Your friends have pitchforks at your door
They'll never leave
No one knows what you dream
Never, if you don't speak
But you don't have to tell me
That you believe
There's lies enough to make you blush
And I don't know what's fair
I cannot think or talk too much
The evidence is there
What catalyst have you designed
To burrow down my line
What's long believed can leave you blind
It buries you sometimes
Freeze frame
The garden gate won't speak
No one knows you're there
So you don't have to show you care
Far waste of time
Stars chase the oxygen from sky
Far waste of time
That you call love
Signs collide and hypnotize
And who knows where to go
I'm holding all the lines inside
With nothing left to show
That arrogance that you described
Is hard to swallow whole
When everyone wants to hurt you
While they tell you that you've lost control
Freeze frame
The steps you take won't creak
No one knows the sound
So you don't have to come around
Far waste of time
Stars chase the oxygen from sky
Far waste of time
That you call love
How do you get past sunrise
In the paradise that you know
Close your eyes
And I'll kiss you goodnight
It's the only thing I've got in mind
Come to find
You are all that I like
And I'd like you much more if I tried
But I'd never fall
For a wounded thing
And it's hard to believe
That you'd suffer for me
When I give you much less than I bring
I know that you need me
But I never needed no one
I know you'd commit me
If I ever left you alone
I'd stop in and see you
But I don't know if I'd go home
It's alright
Take a rest on my doorstep
Maybe I'll see you tonight
Hide your hands
They do all that they can
And they speak more than they understand
On demand
With your head in the sand
You'll find all that your heart can command
But I'd never fall
Like a wounded thing
And it's hard to give in
When I'm out on a limb
And I don't know where I'm to begin
I know that you need me
But I never needed no one
I know you'd commit me
If I ever left you alone
I'd stop in and see you
But I don't know if I'd go home
It's alright
Take a rest on my doorstep
Maybe I'll see you tonight
The rain falls like a melody
Ringing in flats and sharps
Out of touch
Out of tune
Out of time
But they'll never drown your heart
I know that you need me
But I never needed no one
I know you'd commit me
If I ever left you alone
I'd stop in and see you
But I don't know if I'd go home
It's alright
Take a rest on my doorstep
Maybe I'll see you tonight
In the old hotel
Shadows cast their fall
In the night she dwells
A bottle booked and called
Trouble hips sway with the walls
Nobody has to come
Nobody has to go back home
Nobody asks if it's your last dance
In the old hotel
The rhythm reeks of doom
In the night they dwell
Along a flashing tomb
While a mirrorball spins the room
Nobody has to come
Nobody asks to go back home
Nobody asks if it's your last dance
She makes it
Takes it
Like an angel
She breaks
Fakes it
Til she shakes hell
In the old hotel
Shadows dance and play
Reservations held
No bodies in the way
Forever and a day
