If Anybody Asks You Sound & Vision

About If Anybody Asks You

"This song is more about… we’re getting older… we’re in our 40s… There is a sort of feeling of maybe paranoia or terror… the idea that you would ever admit that you're still trying to work for these [dreams] because people kind of look at you like, 'you've got a job and you've got kids'… almost like, 'don't admit to wanting to do those things because you can't do that anymore'."

The fourth single from The Art of Tactful Procrastination.

Release Date: January 14, 2022

If Anybody Asks You Lyrics

If Anybody Asks You

Nobody move
Nobody hurt
Remove your shadow
Before it burns

Ooooooo these days
You’re occupied by the sound
Ooooooo these days
As long as no one's around

So say what you will or won’t
Speak only when spoken to
Don’t change when the wind blows
Easier to say than do
If anybody asks you

You’re losing ground
To modern things
They push your buttons
And pull your strings

Oooooo shake down
That ugly attitude
Oooooo shake down
Til there’s nothing left of you

So say what you will or won’t
Speak only when spoken to
Don’t change when the wind blows
Easier to say than do
If anybody asks you

Is that all you are?
Is that all you want?

Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

One and only

So say what you will or won’t
Speak only when spoken to
Don’t change when the wind blows
Easier to say than do
If anybody asks you

Emerald

We're wasting time
For a sign
That we can see too clearly
There goes another day
And my mind

Who's to blame for this crime?
Will we find
A key to this conspiracy
As the words slip away
With my mind

But anyway
You couldn't be so innocent
You can breathe
But I can't see
Your eyes as emerald
Buried in my soul

Two fools who sing
Queen and King
Who for no rhyme or reason
Who to capture a heart
Without strings

Who's to blame for this sling
For everything
Well who's got time to listen
But will the world fall apart
Without strings?

But anyway
You couldn't be so relevant
You can breathe
But I can't see
Your eyes as emerald
Buried in my soul

Please give me all you have
This forgiving wind
Won't let me in
Please tell me all you know
Like this
Brick road
My soul

If Anybody Asks You Trivia And Other Stories

"I don't know what made me decide to do this as a single… It feels like it's radio friendly… maybe in an indie sense, but because of that weird, offbeat thing that it does or off time thing that it does, it might make you listen to it for a second. And then I had an idea for the video… not that making a video necessarily is a reason to do a single, but I was just like… 'I think it'd be kind of cool to do this one'. It just kind of I got it in my head. 'I’m doing this as a single', and then from then on, I just never really questioned it. Which can be dangerous."

"When I first started working on it… I probably was thinking of Radiohead a bit… The Verve, maybe a little bit of Oasis, but not not really in that brash bravado sense… but some of that snarkiness came through in it nonetheless, more in lyrical content than in the way it's delivered as a vocal."

"[For the music video] I knew what I wanted to do was a video that had an early 90s to mid 90s feel… that slow motion, but in time, kind of thing. We have a park here with a trail in Hendersonville, and I knew where I wanted to do it. In fact, I wanted to do it in front of this tree that… was just like a skeleton bone broken tree. I'd actually taken pictures of it more than two years ago, which are used for the cover of the single. So I knew I wanted to film in front of it."
